A Hat for Mrs. Goldman: A Story About Knitting and Love by Michelle Edwards and illustrated by G. Brian Karas

A lovely picture book about the friendship between a little girl named Sophia and her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Goldman. Mrs. Goldman loves to knit and makes lots of hats for her family and friends, including Sophia. She tried teaching Sophia to knit, but Sophia found it difficult and decided she liked making pom poms for the hats better than making an actual hat. When Sophia accompanies Mrs. Goldman as she walks her dog, she notices that Mrs. Goldman doesn’t have a hat and her ears are cold and red. In her kindness, Mrs. Goldman gave away her own hat. This concerns Sophia, who tries her hardest to knit a hat for Mrs. Goldman. It doesn’t turn out very well, though, until Sophia gets the idea to fill in all the holes with pom poms, which she is good at making! In the end, she presents the hat to Mrs. Goldman, who is very touched by the beautiful and heart-felt gift.
