A Small Thing…but Big by Tony Johnston and illustrated by Hadley Hooper

A picture book for children who are afraid of dogs and also a story of new friendships. Lizzie is afraid of dogs until the day she meets a gentle old man in the park with a small dog named Cecile while out with her mother. The elderly man assures Lizzie that the dog doesn’t bark at little children and only bites her food. He gently encourages Lizzie to pet Cecile. To Lizzie, petting a dog is a small thing…but big. From there, she holds Cecile’s leash and even walks Cecile around the park. At the end, Lizzie is no longer afraid of dogs and the shy old man says that he is no longer afraid of children. Thus, a sweet friendship is born. With colorful, cheerful illustrations.
