Sonya’s Chickens by Phoebe Wahl
This is a picture book that gently explores the cycle of life and the harshness of nature. Sonya is a young girl who lives on a farm. She is thrilled when her father gives her three chicks to raise as her very own. The chicks grow into hens under Sonya’s loving care. One night, a fox gets into the hen house and takes one of the hens. Sonya is heartbroken. Her father explains to her that the fox was taking care of his kits the way he takes care of Sonya and the way Sonya takes care of her chickens. So, although it is sad, the fox was just trying to feed his family, so he had good reason for taking the hen. Sonya mourns her hen and then an egg laid by that hen hatches, so the cycle of life begins anew and Sonya vows to take the best care of that hen just as she did her best for the lost hen.
