Maple by Lori Nichols

This is an endearing picture book about a little girl named Maple whose parents planted a maple tree in their backyard for her even before she was born. As Maple grows, she loves to play outside alongside her tree. Maple loves her tree, but sometimes she feels lonely and wishes she had another playmate. Then, her parents announce a new baby is on the way and Maple gets a little sister. At the same time her parents are expecting a new baby, a willow seedling takes root next to Maple’s tree so when her little sister is born, she has her own tree in the backyard and is named Willow. Accompanied by warm illustrations of Maple outside with the tree in the changing seasons, this is a lovely story about nature, the joy of being outdoors, and siblings. There is also a sequel to this book, entitled Maple and Willow Together.
