What a Wonderful Day to Be a Cow by Carolyn Lesser and illustrated by Melissa Bay Mathis
A lovely picture book that describes the 12 months of the year on a farm. The text creates beautiful imagery, almost like a poem, and the illustrations are soft and luminous. Each 2-page spread describes an animal on the farm for each month of the year and ends with the line, “What a wonderful day to be a …” The animals described include farm animals like cows, horses, and pigs, and also wild animals that live on and around the farm, like swallows and crickets. The beautiful imagery of the book is created by the use of evocative language, including similes and metaphors, such as describing the tree where bluebirds live as a “garden in the sky.” A really beautiful book, both text and illustrations, and a fine way to reinforce the months and seasons of the year and teach about life on a farm.
