Mr. Putter and Tabby Row the Boat by Cynthia Rylant

This is a title in the series of beginning chapter books starring genial Mr. Putter, his cat Tabby, and their neighbors, Mrs. Teaberry and her dog Zeke. These books are perfect for beginning and/or reluctant readers. They celebrate friendship and individuality while telling sweet, funny stories about the four friends’ adventures. In this story, it is hot outside, so Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry, along with Tabby and Zeke, visit the local pond to cool off. They rent a boat and have a lovely day on the water. On the way home, they get all hot and sweaty again, so Mrs. Teaberry cools everyone off by filling her hat with water and pouring it over everyone! The books have wonderful illustrations that add humor to the story, such as birds trying to peck the artificial grapes on Mrs. Teaberry’s hat.
