Pie by Sarah Weeks
This is a sweet, whimsical chapter book set in a small town in the 1950s about family love, friendship, and appreciating people for who they are and the talents they possess. Alice has a close relationship with her Aunt Polly, who is an award-winning pie baker who owns her own pie shop. Polly loves to bake pies so much that she doesn’t charge for them! In return for her pies, the townspeople pay her in eggs, apples, flour, etc. so she can keep baking. When Polly passes away suddenly, Alice’s mother is aghast to find that Polly has left her secret pie crust recipe to her cat and her cat to Alice. But how do you leave a recipe to a cat? As townspeople begin to get pie fever and try to bake pies themselves as well as Polly baked them, Alice discovers that someone is stalking her, possibly after the recipe that could be worth a lot of money. The story is fresh and funny and includes recipes for several pies.
