A Piece of Cake

A Piece of Cake by LeUyen Pham

In this adorable and clever picture book, Mouse bakes a cake for his friend Bird’s birthday. As he walks to Bird’s house with the cake, he is stopped by a chicken, a squirrel, a bear, and a cow who would all like a piece of cake. Being kind-hearted, Mouse trades a piece of cake to each animal for an object that seems useless, such as a cork and a piece of wire. When Mouse finally gets to Bird’s house, the cake is all gone. So Mouse apologetically gives Bird the items he’s collected. Bird is understanding and says that they can find a use for each item and they set out on a walk. They then meet each animal again and make clever trades. For example, Cow wants a stopper for her soap, but instead of trading back the cork, they give her the piece of wire which she bends in order to blow bubbles! They make such trades with each animal and in return get milk, nuts, eggs, etc. Using these items, they bake another birthday cake and share with all the animals. A sweet story with lively illustrations showing how a little ingenuity can go a long way.
