Have You Heard the Nesting Bird? by Rita Gray
A picture book in rhyme that introduces a number of common songbirds and their different songs (ie, a sparrow says chiddik, chiddik). Two children observe different songbirds outside and listen to their songs, but one bird, a robin, is silent. The children wonder why the robin doesn’t sing. In the end, eggs hatch and there are baby robins! A question and answer section at the end of the book explains that nesting birds are quiet to prevent predators from finding the eggs. The book is illustrated with accurate watercolors of the various birds. A good introduction to songbirds for young children. After reading the story, you can try to identify different birds and their songs in your own yard.
