Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
A hilarious picture book about a police officer who speaks at a grade school about safety. The children are bored by his talks and don’t pay attention. As a result, they have accidents at the school caused by being unsafe. Then a police dog named Gloria begins to accompany Officer Buckle and steals the show from him. The children are amused by her tricks and pay attention, thus eliminating accidents. But when Officer Buckle finds out about Gloria’s antics, his feelings are hurt. Officer Buckle tries to go it alone, but his talks are again failures. He and Gloria make up and there is a happy ending. The illustrations make the book – you see Gloria behind Officer Buckle humorously pantomiming each of his safety tips while he remains oblivious, as well as the aforementioned safety accidents. Winner of the Caldecott Medal.
