Winter’s Gift by Jane Monroe Donovan
A beautiful picture book about an elderly widower during his first Christmas season without his wife. In the past, they would choose a tree from the woods and decorate it together, saving the placing of the star ornament on top for the very end. But the man cannot bear to decorate this season because of the loss of his wife. Then, a miraculous event happens that helps to heal the man’s grieving heart. A mare gets lost in a snowstorm on Christmas Eve and ends up at the man’s farm. He finds her outside and takes her into his barn. Overnight, the mare gives birth to a foal who has a star-shaped marking on her fur just like the ornament for the Christmas tree. Truly a magical story about hope and the joy of life and recovering from loss, with lovely illustrations that enhance the beauty of the story. This is the kind of book that adults can read and be moved by as much as children.
