Love, Ruby Lavender by Deborah Wiles
A chapter book about the relationship between nine-year-old Ruby and her quirky grandmother, Miss Eula, who live in rural Mississippi. Ruby and Miss Eula are very close and are mourning the death of Grandpa Garnet. Miss Eula decides she needs a change of scenery and goes to Hawaii to visit her son and new granddaughter. This leaves Ruby feeling abandoned and lonely. But over the course of a wild and wacky summer, Ruby makes new friends, grows as a person, and comes to terms with her grandpa’s death and her guilt over it. The book is very funny and filled with oddball characters and zany situations, plus a sweet bond between grandparent and grandchild.
