The Graveyard Book Commemorative Edition

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

In this chapter book for older elementary students, Bod is a human boy raised by ghosts in a graveyard. After his entire family is killed in his home when he is a toddler, Bod escapes to the graveyard where the kind-hearted ghostly residents take him in and raise him, trying to keep him safe from the killer, who still pursues him. The graveyard inhabitants are colorful characters, including ghosts from different time periods and supernatural creatures like ghouls and witches, all of whom watch over Bod and contribute to his education. The book follows Bod’s growth and adventures from toddler to teen. It is a hard book to describe, as it is a blend of fantasy, horror, magic, and suspense, while also telling a loving family story, albeit a very unusual family. Winner of both the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal.
