The Squirrel and the Moon by Eleonore Schmid
A lovely, gentle picture book about the first year of life of an Eurasian red squirrel named Tifi who falls in love with the beauty of the full moon and becomes concerned when the moon starts to wane, thinking that it must be hungry and not getting enough to eat. So Tifi plants a circle of nuts just for the moon. Even when winter comes and Tifi and her siblings are hungry, she refuses to eat the nuts that she gathered for the moon. The following year, the nuts that Tifi planted sprout into young trees that provide Tifi and her siblings and their young food for years to come. A sweet story about making sacrifices for those we love and how we are repaid for our kindness. The book is illustrated with accurate scientific pencil color drawings of the squirrels and their habitat.
