Lulu and the Dog from the Sea by Hilary McKay
A beginning chapter book and part of a series about 7-year-old Lulu, an avid animal lover. In this book, Lulu, her parents, and her cousin rent a seaside cottage on their vacation. There they meet a stray dog, disliked by the residents because he goes through their trash looking for food. Compassionate Lulu wants to make friends with the people-shy dog. In the end, Lulu’s family adopts the dog and brings him home with them. A lovely story about compassion for homeless animals that includes the dog’s thoughts as well as the people’s thoughts, so we can understand his fear and hunger and know that he is not bad or dangerous, just struggling to survive on his own. The books about Lulu are especially appropriate for children who are animal lovers because each title involves Lulu’s experiences with a different animal. The other books in the series deal with a duck and a cat.
