The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale Of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall
Jeanne Birdsall’s books remind me of Elizabeth Enright, but set in modern times. The books are full of old-fashioned charm and tell a lovely family story with believable characters and situations. In this first book about the Penderwicks, the family, consisting of the widowed Mr. Penderwick, his four daughters, and their dog go on vacation to a cottage on a big estate in Massachusetts. There they meet the boy who lives on the estate, Jeffrey, and his mother, with whom Jeffrey has a difficult relationship. The girls and Jeffrey become friends and help him to deal with his mother and mend their relationship. Winner of the National Book Award.
