Cornelia and the Audacious Escapades of the Somerset Sisters by Lesley M.M. Blume

An outstanding book for older elementary school children, 11-year-old Cornelia is lonely and immerses herself in words. Her mother is a famous pianist and is often away from home. Then a wonderful thing happens in Cornelia’s life: an elderly lady named Virginia Somerset moves into the apartment next door, along with her Indian servant and her bulldog. Virginia led a very adventuresome life with her sisters, traveling all over the world post-World War II, and she shares these exciting adventures with Cornelia. The two develop a special bond and through Virginia’s influence, Cornelia’s life opens up. A really beautiful story about love and friendship.
