Gone-Away Lake

Gone Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright

This is one of my all-time favorite chapter books. It is written by one of my favorite children’s book authors, Elizabeth Enright. She is an old-fashioned writer, her work having been published from the 1930s to her death in the 1960s.  This book tells of the summer adventures of two cousins visiting the country in upstate New York. They stumble upon an old, run-down resort next to a lake that has turned into a swampy bog. There they discover an eccentric elderly brother and sister pair who grew up on the lake several decades ago and have returned to live out the remainder of their days in their former home, now a ruin. The book intersperses stories from the pair during their childhood on the lake with the children’s present-day adventures with the pair. A charming, old-fashioned story with adventure and fun. Winner of the Newbery Honor. It was followed by a sequel, Return to Gone Away.
