The Stray by Dick King-Smith
A sweet story for primary grade children about a lonely, older lady living unhappily in a retirement home who meets several children on vacation with their parents and the special relationship they development with one another. Dick King-Smith was a prolific author of children’s chapter books and I highly recommend all of his titles. Most of them are fantasies involving domestic or farm animals. His most famous book is probably Babe: The Gallant Pig, which was made into a fine movie. The Stray is a bit different from most of his other works, because the main characters are people, not animals, but it is a fun and touching story.
